It is my privilege to welcome you to the Website of the Forum of Energy Ministers of Africa (FEMA), which is intended to contribute to a more dynamic exchange of information and experience among the member States, as well as other stakeholders and development partners.
Today, more than ever, the issue of energy security and sustainability, including climate change, requires joint efforts from all over the world. All Countries, irrespective of their level of development, energy potential and geographic location, must share common and individual responsibilities to overcome the challenges facing the energy sector. This needs investments to be undertaken, especially with regard to energy infrastructure development.
It is precisely the lack of investment support over the past few decades that caused the current energy crisis characterized essentially by supply insecurity. Some of the major challenges in this regard include:
Firstly, the insufficient power generation capacity to meet the rapidly changing demand;
Secondly, the extremely low level of access to energy for business, basic services and households, preventing the productive use of energy as a tool to fight poverty;
Thirdly, in spite of abundant energy resources the overwhelming majority of the population in African countries relies on low quality energy resources. This Website is a continuation of the work that has been developed under the Ugandan Chairmanship and it is in line with progress made by FEMA in pursuing its Mission.
The access to energy related information and data forms an important basis for design and implementation of more consistent development strategies and policies at national and regional level.
It is within this context that we are confident that the development of this website provides appropriate means through which, either individually or institutionally, we can express our view on matters pertaining to the energy sector development.
The relevance of this website and the quality of the information depend also on you, dear visitor, and therefore we would like to, once again, welcome you and your valuable contributions.
Welcome and thank you very much
Salvador Namburete
